A Good Traveler does not Arrive

There is an ancient Chinese proverb written by Laozi, that a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. While the lesson may have been to help teach that all endeavors – great and small alike – have a beginning, I enjoy it at its most pragmatic level. Nearly three decades ago I took my first solo trip, and I have been traveling ever since.

Koh Lipe, Thailand

Koh Lipe is small and well suited to serve one very specific type of travel – the tiny island retreat. The island has everything the tropical island retreater longs for without gouging the wallet – well-stocked all-inclusive beech bungalow resorts, a central walking street with small shops selling trinkets, souvenirs, swimming suits, diving and snorkeling equipment, and plenty of restaurants preparing fresh grilled seafood, dive shops, local tours to nearby islands, and plenty of white sand beaches.

Man Mo temple – Hong Kong

Hong Kong is well known for its skyline and ultra-modern metropolitan status. However, tucked within those polished, gleaming towers of steel and glass are these marvelous relics of the city’s long religious history. Stepping into some of these old-world temples feels as much like what I suspect time-travel into the past must feel like.
